Beware, Shirk Is All Around Us!

www.thetruemuslim.com - Whenever you hear someone preaching in front of you about the danger of shirk or idolatry practice is actually everywhere, it’s so understandable for you to start wondering about whether it’s true or not. And if it’s true, where’s the proof? Well, you may think that way because that statement comes from the mouth of some man. But, what about the statement who directly comes from Allah?

Yes, Allah has ever stated,

“And most of them believe not in Allah except while they associate others with Him.”
(QS.Yusuf 12: 106)

and

"And most of the people, although you strive [for it], are not believers"(QS.Yusuf 12: 103)

It can be inferred from that verse that most men, despite the fact that they really want to apply the guidance from Allah, they actually don’t really have the faith in Allah (with true faith) because they still practice shirk.

Further, prophets Muhammad shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said that

"There won’t be any apocalypse until some groups of my followers join the polytheists and worship their gods( everything that is worshiped besides Allâh)" [1]

The Essence of Shirk

Shirk, in its essence, is the act of comparing Allah subhanahu wata’ala with the other things or creatures by considering the characters. Shirk can be done in many ways like to ask for help (praying) to the others but Allah.

In order to avoid the acts of shirk, it’s definitely a good idea for us to understand the kinds of shirk that happen in reality. Therefore, we can really see how such acts are related to shirk. The following will show us some of the examples. Although those examples refer to the acts that happened in the past time but at least, we can learn from them and try to avoid them.

Examples of Shirk

1. In the past time (during jahiliyah/ignorance era), many people had faith that Allah was the only one responsible for creating and giving fortune but at the same time, those people also prayed to their ancestors especially those whom they considered as the holy people and asked for some blessings from them.

Allah Azza Wa Jalla Said That,

"And those who take protectors besides Him [say], "We only worship them that they may bring us nearer to Allah in position." Indeed, Allah will judge between them concerning that over which they differ. Indeed, Allah does not guide he who is a liar and [confirmed] disbeliever."
(Q.S Az-Zumar/39:3)

Allâh Azza wa Jalla does not require the existence of intermediaries from His creatures.

Allâh Azza wa Jalla said:

"And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided"  (QS. Al-Baqarah/2:186)

2. In the past time, people prayed to Allah during their hard times. But, then, they forgot Allah when they were in easy times and prayed to the others.

Allâh Azza wa Jalla said:

"And when they board a ship, they supplicate Allah, sincere to Him in religion. But when He delivers them to the land, at once they associate others with Him" (QS. Al-‘Ankabût/29:65)

3. Doing ibadah with the intent to be aimed to the other but Allah is a kind of shirk. For instance, some people ask for some blessings from the holy people who have died.

Allâh Azza wa Jalla said:

"Say, 'Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds. No partner has He. And this I have been commanded, and I am the first [among you] of the Muslims.'" [al-An’âm/6:162-163]

4. Visiting clairvoyance, fortune teller, witch, and the likes and justify what they say. This is not only an act of shirk but also an act of belying the religion.

Allâh Azza wa Jalla said:

"And they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Harut and Marut. But the two angels do not teach anyone unless they say, "We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic]." And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allah . And the people learn what harms them and does not benefit them. But the Children of Israel certainly knew that whoever purchased the magic would not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew." (QS. al-Baqarah/2:102)

This is because the shamans and sorcerers are claiming to know the affairs of the supernatural, but this is a specialty for Allâh Subhanahu wa Ta'ala.

Allah Ta' Alla said :

"Say, 'None in the heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allah, and they do not perceive when they will be resurrected.' "(QS.An-Naml/27:65)

5. Being too much in glorifying Prophet Muhammad. The prophet himself even forbid his followers to glorify him too much because he was also the servant for Allah.

Prophets Muhammad shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said

“Do not exaggerate in praising me as the Christians praised the son of Mary, for I am only a Slave. So, call me the Slave of Allah and His Apostle."[2]

Allâh Subhanahu wa Ta’ala said:

"Say, 'I hold not for myself [the power of] benefit or harm, except what Allah has willed. And if I knew the unseen, I could have acquired much wealth, and no harm would have touched me. I am not except a warner and a bringer of good tidings to a people who believe.'" (QS. Al-A’râf/7:188)

6. It’s also considered an act of shirk if you have some charms with you or around you and you believe that the charms work in protecting you or giving you some blessings.

7. Saying your oath in the name of other than Allah is also an act of shirk. [3]
